Ostara Newsletter

Ostara Greetings

When I think of Ostara and the Equinox, my mind always turns to the return of the light — longer evenings and warmer days. It encourages me to begin cleaning and decluttering the house and garden after the long winter months. I notice the flowers and blossoms appearing, quietly confident in the knowing that soon the trees will be full of leaves, and eventually fruits and nuts for us to harvest.

Ostara is a time of balance. The word equinox, our modern term, means “equal night” — from the Latin aequus meaning equal, and nox meaning night. At this point in the year, day and night are equal. It is a moment of harmony and equilibrium.

Yet this balance can also herald change and movement. Perfect balance only lasts for a fleeting moment, and for life to shift and grow, something must tip the scales. Because of this, the equinox often carries with it the energy of transformation. We are now moving toward a time of increasing light. Our next solar festival will be the Solstice, when the sun dominates the sky and the days stretch long and bright.

Although the shift can feel gradual, we are already at the beginning of this journey. Ostara is therefore a wonderful time to harness the energies of the land and sky to support all that we wish to bring forward in the months ahead.

What are your dreams? Your desires? What do you want more of in your life? What do you wish to welcome in?

Use this time to weave a little magic into all that you do.

Are you preparing your garden for new plants? As you prepare the soil, ask that the path be cleared for your desires to manifest.

Are you planting seeds? As you place them into the earth, imagine your own dreams taking root — growing, strengthening, and rising into the light.

Are you cleaning your home? Declutter to make space for the new. As you dust and sweep away the debris of the past year, set the intention that your home becomes a sanctuary where your dreams can take shape.

Use this time to gently tip the scales in your favour. Be the action that initiates growth and change. Step forward into the becoming of all that you were born to be

Ostara

The name of the festival of Ostara carries some ambiguity regarding its origins. Ostara was popularised as a Pagan festival by Gerald Gardner during the revival of Wicca in the 1950s. Prior to this, there are references to various Saxon goddesses — Eostra, Eostro and Asteron — and Germanic figures such as Austro, Eostra and Ostara. These were discussed by Bede in the early Middle Ages.

Regardless of the precise origins of the name, the Spring Equinox itself has long been an important point in the yearly cycle and has been celebrated across many cultures and traditions throughout history. It is thought by some historians that the importance of these seasonal celebrations influenced the development of the Christian festival of Easter, as existing spring festivals were gradually adapted into Christian observances.

Themes of fertility, new life rising from seemingly barren land, rebirth, and the return of the light are present in many of these ancient celebrations. These same themes can also be seen reflected in the story of Christ’s resurrection, which Christians commemorate at this time of year.

Ostara is a time of rebirth and renewal — a moment when life begins to stir again and warmth slowly returns after the long stillness of winter. Ostara is often associated with the Goddess of the dawn. The name Eostre is linked to the East, the direction from which the sun rises each morning, bringing light to the world.

Traditionally, this period marked the beginning of the agricultural year — a time for clearing the land, preparing the soil, and planting seeds in the hope of an abundant harvest later in the seasons to come.

Ostara also represents a moment of perfect balance between light and dark, the masculine and the feminine. In many Pagan traditions it is seen as the time when the Goddess meets her lover for the first time, awakening the fertility of the earth and setting the great cycle of growth in motion once more.

There is also a charming story that explains how the Easter Bunny became part of our modern Easter traditions. Biologically, rabbits are not known for laying eggs, yet this tale offers a magical explanation.

Long ago, many moons before humankind walked upon the earth, Eostre, the Goddess of the dawn, rode a magnificent chariot across the sky each morning, drawing the sun up into the heavens. Her chariot was pulled by a great bird who soared powerfully across the sky.

The story tells that Eostre was so grateful for the bird’s loyalty and strength that she granted its wish to experience life in another form. As a gift, she transformed the bird into a hare so that it might run freely upon the earth.

Yet a small trace of its former life remained. In honour of the great Goddess Eostre, and in remembrance of the time when it once soared through the skies, the hare continued to lay eggs each spring — brightly coloured gifts offered during the season of renewal and celebration.

And so, it is said, the tradition of the Easter hare was born.

Magical Ostara Tasks

Ostara is traditionally a time for a thorough spring clean and decluttering. It is a moment to clear both our physical space and our energetic space so that we can welcome the new and allow fresh ideas to grow.

As you tidy and cleanse your home, open your doors and windows wide. Let the old air and stagnant energy flow out, releasing anything that no longer serves you. Invite the new in on the fresh spring breeze — the light, warmth, and possibilities of the season ahead.

You may wish to spiritually cleanse your space at this time too. Smudge your home with sage or another cleansing herb, sprinkle a little spring water around your rooms, and refresh your altar with seasonal symbols such as flowers, eggs, seeds, or candles representing the returning light.

The Equinox is also a time of planting and new beginnings. Seeds placed into the earth now carry the promise of transformation. Whether you plant herbs, vegetables, or flowers, take a moment as you sow them to set an intention for the year ahead. Just as the seeds grow and reach toward the sun, allow your own hopes and dreams to take root and flourish.

Another lovely Ostara tradition is decorating eggs. If you have children, or simply wish to reconnect with your own playful creativity, decorate eggs using colours associated with Ostara and spring — soft pinks, bright yellows, sky blues, and fresh greens. Eggs have long symbolised fertility, new life, and abundance.

Once your eggs are decorated, you could follow an old folk custom and roll them down a grassy hill. The egg that travels the furthest without breaking is said to carry the strongest fortune for the year ahead.

You may also wish to honour the balance of the Equinox itself. As day and night stand equal, this is a perfect time for quiet reflection. Light two candles — one for the returning light and one for the fading darkness — and spend a few moments considering what you wish to release and what you wish to welcome into your life.

Some people choose to create a small seasonal altar during this time. Fresh flowers, budding branches, seeds, feathers, and eggs all make beautiful symbols of renewal and the awakening earth.

A simple Ostara ritual is to greet the sunrise on the morning of the Equinox. Step outside, take a deep breath of the cool spring air, and offer gratitude for the returning warmth and light.

This is also the time of year when hares begin to appear more frequently in the countryside. The hare has long been associated with springtime, fertility, and the Goddess. For those of us based in Norfolk, Sandringham Estate offers a wonderfully wild landscape where you may be lucky enough to spot the elusive hare in its natural habitat. And who knows — if you are very fortunate, you might even glimpse it delivering a few colourful eggs in honour of Ostara.

However you choose to celebrate, Ostara invites us to step into the season of growth — to plant our seeds, tend our dreams, and welcome the light as it returns once more.

This Month

As the dark half of the year begins to soften and the light slowly returns, I have been quietly weaving some new offerings into being for the season ahead. 🌙✨

Over the winter months I have been working behind the scenes, listening to the whispers of inspiration and creating spaces for connection, learning, and a little bit of magic.

As we step into the brighter half of the year, I’m delighted to share what is emerging…
